What is NGFFL?

Author: Cha Her

NGFFL stands for the National Gay Flag Football League. They encourage the social benefits of flag football and focus on promoting a safe and accepting place for all LGBTQ+ people. Its mission is demonstrated through inclusive social activities, giving back, and building partnerships. On their About page is their Board of Directors' biography and contact information. This is a great way to learn more about their league leadership and the passions that drive the league.

The organization's home page has a nice layout with bold fonts and visuals. One thing that stood out to me was how they have over 200 teams in 22 leagues across the US and Canada. These teams include the NFFLA, NYGFL, TUFF, MNGFFL, etc. The league is active in its social media posts, especially on Instagram. They make posts and updates about any new upcoming competitions and registrations. If you are interested in joining or want more information, contact the league Director of Outreach & Membership.

The league has two big competitions, which are Gay Bowl and Sin City Classic.

  1. The Gay Bowl is their annual national flag football tournament with US and Canadian players. This year, it will be held in Honolulu from October 6th to the 9th. There is information about airfare and hotel that helps players and fans to compete or attend the events. Towards the bottom of the page, a promotion video showcases what the competition is all about.

  2. In contrast, the Sin City Classic will be located in Las Vegas. For more information, don't hesitate to get in touch with their flag football coordinator. NGFFL also highlights their member league local tournaments; if you are interested, definitely check it out!

One of the league's missions was to give back to its community by hosting the Commissioner's Cup. This event highlights clubs demonstrating a commitment to their community through service and engagement. The winning league receives a $500 donation to a charity of their choice. Some past winners were the Chicago Metropolitan Sports Association in 2019, which fundraised and gave away $1,500 each to the Trevor Project and Broadway Youth Center of Chicago. The league's work is fantastic, and it's helping other organizations thrive.

What I found the most interesting was the NGFFL newsletter! They have a monthly newsletter that keeps you updated on what they are doing around the league nationwide. The June newsletter consisted of information on the Gay Bowl Hawaii, NGFFL participation conduct committees, Hall of Fame nominations, Pride Month, etc. There are a lot of topics that were mentioned, so give it a read! I promise you it's worth it!
