Fundraiser for LGBT Youth and Humane Society in Minneapolis
Disclaimer off the bat: This post is about the LGBT softball team I play on. Yes, sure, you can call this shameless promo, but I'm posting this because I think it's extremely important. Also puppies.
This Saturday (7/8/17) in Minneapolis, my softball team is hosting a fundraiser at a local bar to benefit two organizations. One is the Animal Humane Society and the other is RECLAIM.
RECLAIM focuses on increasing the access of mental health support to LGBT youth and it is so important that it exists.
Growing up LGBT in a smaller town in WI was extremely difficult for me. My closest friends know exactly what I'm talking about. I was severely depressed and besides a couple close friends, there wasn't anyone I could talk to. RECLAIM is something that I have recently heard about but I stand by their mission and personally am passionate about helping those younger than me to make sure they don't have to go through what I did.
Obviously things have changed the past couple of years with marriage equality going through and general acceptance increasing, but helping youth who may not realize that it gets better is so so important.
Besides RECLAIM, the Animal Humane Society is something I've always been passionate about ever since I was a child. Animals help people in so many ways and I think their mission represents that:
"To engage the hearts, hands and minds of the community to help animals."
It tells the story of animals really connecting with us and how we use our full-selves to connect with them. It's a personal connection that people sometimes need.
That is why this fundraiser is important and that's why I'm writing a blog post on this website about it. 100% of the money will be going to the two organizations. Some fundraisers take a cut, but we're donating 100% of it with a goal of $2,500.
Last year, we had a fundraiser planned as a team to help just general team fundings. Then the tragedy at Pulse Orlando occurred and we decided to switch gears with our fundraiser and donate all proceeds to the efforts in Orlando. In that one night, we raised a total of $2,316 which is incredible. As an LGBT community in Minneapolis, we did what we could to support our lost brothers and sisters. Going forward, my team has decided to have an annual fundraiser for charities we find passionate. This weekend is the second annual.
So please, if you have the time this Saturday night, come by for a drink or even a small donation and let's make the world a better place one step at a time.
